The Candidate forum held May 7 from 6 – 7 pm at the Vet’s Hall in Valley Springs underscored why it is important that we win this election. Sharing the stage with Clyde Clapp and Ben Stopper, I focused on our main issues of fiscal responsibility and ongoing constituent contact. Clapp mentioned his concern for roads and the budget deficit – both of which I am more capable of working with, as well as taking credit for outcomes that were clearly not his alone – stopping the asphalt plant and generating a budget surplus. Stopper had a problem discussing communication with constituents, as he has proven to be unavailable more often than not – and answering fiscal questions with vague generalities. Both Clapp and Stopper said the most important issue was the budget, where I have clear experiential and educational advantages over my two opponents.
The format of the forum didn’t allow for extended responses to the questions offered (2 minute answer time limit) nor to a wide array of questions – only 7 allowed: most important issues, the appropriate use of the general fund, how to address local flooding, support of D5 businesses, communication, the biggest problem facing the district, increasing the TOT tax and a summation.
Still, I was able to focus on what is immediately important to District 5 voters – having a voice on the Board that represents their interests. Having weekly office hours at the Clubhouse will connect voters to a government that is increasingly remote and unaccountable. I appreciate your support and vote on June 2.
